U-boats are submarines that were used by Germany during both World War I and World War II. The German word for submarine is “Untersee-boot,” which is abbreviated as U-boat. The designation U-552 refers to a Type VIIC submarine that was used by Germany during World War II. Lieutenant Erich Topp captained U-552, which entered service on December 4, 1940.
Throughout World War II, U-552 completed a total of twelve patrols and sank 28 Allied ships, including a US Navy destroyer and an aircraft carrier. It was also known for its Red Devil (Roter Teufel) emblem, which was the personal symbol of Captain Erich Topp, a fanatical Nazi party member. Captain Topp had the symbol painted on his helmet as well.
