The Jensen family sings worship songs Tuesday afternoon during a memorial service for Luke Jensen, a 9-year-old who died of leukemia on may 6.

They filled Vancouver first Church of God’s sanctuary carrying boxed Lego sets by the hundreds, his favorite. they placed them at the foot of the altar next to a smiling portrait of Luke Jensen.

When the music started, the mourners clapped and lifted their voices.

Tuesday was a time to celebrate a 9-year-old whose life was cut short by leukemia. But it was a life marked by faith and courage that made him older than his years.

There were tears. But there was also laughter, as family and friends reminisced about funny Luke memories and showed goofy pictures in a slide show. one photo showed him making silly faces. In another, Luke had chocolate caked on his face.

Celebrating the fond memories “is exactly what Luke would have wanted,” his father, Steve, told the packed sanctuary Tuesday afternoon. “We called him our passionate one.”

The memorial for the Battle Ground boy, who died may 6 after battling cancer since 2007, drew a thousand people to the church’s sanctuary. nearly 800 more people watched the memorial service on big screens in the adjoining King’s Way Christian School’s gym.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked attendees to bring Legos. the plastic building blocks will be donated to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and Children’s Cancer Association in Luke’s name.

Worship songs led off the ceremony, with powerful faith messages striking a chord with the audience.

“You give and take away. you give and take away. my heart will choose to stay. Blessed be your name,” the crowd sang.

The Rev. Dave Galanter told the audience they could all learn a lot from a boy who “used to be afraid of shots and came to the point he wasn’t afraid of death.”

“Don’t let this moment pass. Ask yourself what the secret of Luke’s life was,” Galanter said. “It was his faith.”

Luke was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2007. He underwent several rounds of treatment at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, including two transplants with bone marrow donated by his siblings, Tori and Jake. Despite all the efforts to cure him, the cancer recurred in March.

Many people throughout the United States and outside the country began following the boy’s journey on his family’s online blog.

‘Everybody’s friend’

Those who spoke at the service — cousins, friends, and a teacher — remembered Luke as “everybody’s best friend,” kind, joyful and mischievous. He loved tickles and hugs. His faith seemed to grow as his cancer progressed.

Luke’s grandfather, Mike White, spoke about his grandson’s signature humor and his genius at video games. White said he remembered one time playing a game with his grandson. He couldn’t get the hang of it.

“I said, ‘I missed video games by a generation,’” White said. “And he said, ‘No, you missed video games by several generations.’”

At the service’s end, mourners sang a Christian song particularly special to Luke. White said the boy would hear it on the radio and lift his arms, telling his mom he was reaching to heaven. Called “I will Rise,” by contemporary Christian artist Chris Tomlin, the song is about meeting God in a better place. it was fitting.

“When he calls my name, no more sorrow, no more pain,” the crowd sang. “I will rise on eagle’s wings before my God on my knees. I will rise.”

The Force is strong with JibJab. the humor site, which often puts together goofy animated adventures that you can customize with photos of your friends’ faces, has really outdone itself this time: in honor of the 30th anniversary of the release of The Empire Strikes Back, the site has gotten the rights to re-create the original Star Wars Trilogy. except instead of the familiar faces of Han, Luke, and Leia, you’ll be watching your friends take on the Empire.

There are three clips available — one for each film in the original trilogy. the videos take footage from the original films, condense each into a whirlwind two minutes of wisecracks, and insert your friends’ faces wherever possible. the end result is hilarious.

There’s obviously a big monetization opportunity here, which JibJab is taking advantage of. You’ll be able to create your own clip for The Empire Strikes Back for free, but only paid members will be able to make clips based on A new Hope or Return of the Jedi. We’ve embedded all three clips below, starring some of the TechCrunch writers.

This is by far my favorite JibJab video series, but they’ve had plenty of other good ones. recent features include the keyboard cat tribute to play off 2009, and the ever-popular Elf yourself.

Widely regarded as non-canon now in the wake of prequels, novels and other comics, the Marvel series was all fans had to go on once the film had left theatres (other than Alan Dean Foster's 'Splinter of the Mind's Eye' novel which came out about the same time as this story arc). Marvel didn't always get things right (a giant green rabbit called 'Jaxxon'? honestly?), but they damn well tried. They did at least get some minimal approval from Lucas for each storyline, but took their time in bringing Darth Vader back in as a villain as it was not clear at that point what the plans were for the character in the upcoming sequel. So there were plenty of other villains devised to fill in the gaps in the meantime.

Issue #7 picks up pretty much immediately after the ending of the film when all the rebels are presumably recovering from their post-Death Star destruction celebrations. Han and Chewie head off on the Falcon with their reward money with the intention of paying off Jabba the Hutt (spelt 'Hut' here). unfortunately for them they are boarded by a pirate known as 'Crimson Jack'. the cool thing about this guy (the only cool thing) is that he is cruising around in a hijacked Imperial Star Destroyer. he relates to Han in a later issue just how he came by this. After pilfering all Han and Chewie's money, Jack gives them the boot (theorising that he can rob them again sometime if he lets them go free). Poor old Han. Return to start. do not collect $200.

With a price on their heads and not a cent to their name, Han and Chewie decide to lay low on a backwater planet called Aduba-3. here they get into some trouble with a mob of locals who object to a 'borg' (cyborg) being buried in a local cemetery (why Han cares about this or decides to get involved is beyond me). After brawling with the hoodlums, our heroes decide to hit the bars and check out the local girls. Their fun is interrupted by some cheerless looking fellows who have a job proposition...

Issue #8 tells us that the local moisture farmers are being plagued by a gang of 'Cloud-Riders' led by one 'Serji-X Arrogantus' who rustle their banthas and take off with their women. Han agrees to help for no fee, purely out of the goodness of his charitable heart (the writers here didn't seem to have a handle on Han's mercenary/scoundrel image yet) and so, in the upstairs room of a seedy dive, he begins interviewing potential guns for hire (with his shirt off for some reason). his chosen six include the aforementioned green rabbit, an eccentric old buffer called Don-Wan Kihotay (geddit?) who claims to be a Jedi Knight and even has a lightsaber, a 'spiner' called Hedji, a human kid called Jimm (who likes to be known as 'The Starkiller Kid'), a droid called FE-9Q ('Effie'), and Amaiza Foxtrain, an old acquaintance of Han's who, it is explained, used to head the infamous 'Black Hole Gang'.

Meanwhile, back on Yavin IV, Luke heads off with the droids to search for a new base for the Rebels. this bit is pretty brief but serves to assure us that the writers haven't forgotten Luke and Leia and the rest of the Rebels who are, with good reason, concerned that a fleet of extremely irate Imperials will be coming down on them pretty soon.

Back on Aduba-3, Solo and the gang soon encounter Serji-X who arrives with his crew on speeder bikes. some banter is made and the battle lines are drawn with Serji-X taking off spouting threats.

Issue #9 sees Solo and his gang making their way across Aduba-3 to the village they have been hired to protect. En route they are attacked by 'High Hounds', giant bloodthirsty birds. Han spots one of the villagers, a pretty girl in a loincloth, being attacked and saves her. The birds take off and the gang reach the village.

Meanwhile, Luke's mission to find an new location for the Rebel base has brought him to the Drexel system. he makes contact with Leia, but something seems to frighten him and he abruptly breaks off contact.On Aduba-3, Han and his chums are confronted by an old man known as the 'Old One' who claims that their help is not needed, as he has faith in a mystical solution he once beheld in his youth. Ignoring him, the six companions take on Serji-X and his men who have just arrived on the scene. A battle ensues in which both Effie and Don-Wan bite the dust. things look bad, but are set to look worse as the old One summons a gigantic lizard creature from the mountain which brings us to...

Issue #10 - 'Behemoth from the World below!'
The creature (which has a built in blaster) begins attacking Serji-X and his men, but its heavy footsteps begin an avalanche. It also inadvertently steps on Serji-X as well as the old duffer who summoned it. 'Heavenly Hutches!'

With the Cloud-Riders dealt with, Han and the gang attempt to take on the beast themselves with little success. Then, Don-Wan (who is somehow alive again - continuity, guys!) rushes to meet the creature head-on in chivalrous knight fashion...
Cut to a brief segment on Leia as she leaves Yavin IV to search for Luke who is now missing in action.

Don-Wan has little success against the beast with his lightsaber and Hedji tries flinging a few spines at it to no avail. Han theorises that the lightsaber is only making the monster madder and snatches it from Don-Wan and plants it right in the big lizard's chest. this causes the creature to rapidly disintegrate, leaving Han as the hero of the day.

The gang receive a handsome reward from the villagers for their efforts (weren't they doing it for free? Another continuity issue, I'm afraid). The girl Han saved in the last issue hitches up with Jimm and the heroes go their own separate ways. And so ends the first non-movie story arc in the marvel canon. but what about Luke Skywalker? Well, that's a different story...

I also came across some great Star Wars related ads within the pages of these comics. The first shows some 1978 calendars including a Frank Frazetta one which must have been awesome. Artist Howard Chaykin also treats us to a 'pin up' of the heroes. I wonder if any kids actually tore this out of their comic and pinned it to their bedroom wall. You've got to love Chewie's 'cat-face' and who the hell did Chaykin have in mind when he was drawing Leia? 'A Galaxy of Star Wars Treasures' greets us here showing all the staples such as those t-shirt transfers that seemed to be everywhere back then. I love how Obi-Wan is politely tapping that stormtrooper on the shoulder who is admiring a poster for the movie.

A couple of images from the back covers. The first is a particularly nauseating 'Patty Prayer Doll'. I can't imagine who Marvel thought its target audience was with this one. Presumably the same ad made its way onto the backs of Spider-man and Incredible Hulk comics too.

One of the most interesting aspects of the Star Wars Miniatures Game has been the huge variety of figures produced and the complementary nature of their game statistics. Figures that are strong against Force users with Melee Attack can be very weak against ranged shooters. Powerful commander effects can be nullified with good placement of a figure with the Disruptive special ability. "Chaos on Cloud City" focuses on engaging the enemy with mismatches and deciding where and when to gain an advantage!

Strategy Tips

If it helps you to solve the puzzle, you can set up the figures on the Cloud City map (from the Ultimate Missions: Rebel Storm book) as seen in the photo. The blank side of a map and replacement figures work just as well. Setting up the figures might help you to make decisions about how they should move. The stairs underneath the Rebel Trooper on Tauntaun (and other stairs not shown) are difficult terrain and have been colored with lines to match DCI rules for this map. Make sure you consider this when moving figures.

What is the priority target for each side? There are advantages and disadvantages to attacking certain targets. for example:

• Mara Jedi, Jedi can do tremendous damage if she can attack an unactivated adjacent opponent with Lightsaber Assault. If Yoda of Dagobah uses Force Defense, she will get no attacks.
• Kyle Katarn, Jedi Battlemaster gets the Lightsaber Duelist bonus to protect him against Luke's Landspeeder and negates Han, Rebel Hero's very useful commander effect while within 6 squares of any figure that could use it.
• Shaak Ti, Jedi Master has some of the strongest defenses against figures with Melee Attack but is very vulnerable to figures without that Special Ability.

Gambit rules are used in this puzzle. The center point of the map is the upper left corner of E10. If you are unfamiliar with Gambit rules, refer to the Star Wars Miniatures DCI Floor Rules (available as a Word file or a PDF file).

Yeah, after last years' cute Hoth set I just assumed that the Wampa Cave would include a Taun-Taun. I mean, that IS what the Wampa is feasting on, after all. Who wants another generic snowspeeder (identical to the last model, I must add)? if it includes a snowspeeder, why not Han Solo and a survival tent too? Come on, choose a scene, stop awkwardly splitting them. Oh, and thanks for having the creativeness to include two sets featuring Zev Senesca in the same year. Really innovative. I'll buy this set, but mostly for the Wampa and Luke in Hoth gear.

The stormtrooper figure is one of the original twelve figures, and the ultimate army builder. if you are not a hard-core collector, the term "army builder" means figures that there are many, many of in that universe. So, while there may only be one Han in the Star Wars universe, there are a million stormtroopers (actually, it's estimated that Luke killed about one million Imperials when he blew up the first death star, making him the biggest killer in the movies). In the first movie alone there were lord-knows-how-many stormtroopers shot just by Luke and the gang while trying to get out of the death star.

The stormtrooper had the traditional blaster, which was subsequently copied for many of the other figures in the Star Wars wave. His head couldn't turn, but in subsequent versions (1990's+) it did. this figure came on all four cards: SW, ESB, ROTJ, POTF. The figure itself is very close to the actual stormtrooper detailing.

Why should you own this figure? Five reasons:

1. As mentioned before, army builder, army builder, army builder. You shouldn't own one, you should own 10. Check Ebay, there are probably people selling 10-20 of these at a time.

2. They fall like dominoes in the movies - so get a bunch and have your own stormtrooper domino rally.

3. The most prevalent figure in the original Star Wars universe. You're going to get a lot of crap from your friends if you don't get this one.

4. like I've mentioned in many a post, helmeted figures are automatically cool. having one that looks like a skull-head is even cooler.

5. Recreate your own exciting version of the conversation near the death star's tractor beam: "Must be another drill." Oh, the drama!

Stormtroopers grew out of the surviving clone troopers that served in the Clone Wars. By the time of the first movie, about 1/3 of stormtroopers were from Jango Fett's original DNA, the rest were from other DNA sources and humans recruited in the traditional manner.

A stormtroopers armor was made of a plastoid composite fitted over a black body glove. this gave some protection from blaster shots (obviously not a lot given the movies' body count) and protection against most climates. In fact there was a limited air supply built in and troopers could survive in the vacuum of space for short periods. The E-11 blaster rifle was standard issue for most troopers (the one that came with the figure).

When not in the white armor, stormtroopers wore a black dress uniform, seen mainly in the first movie aboard the death star. About the only variation that stormtroopers had were the shoulder pauldrons to show rank (see the stormtroopers on Tatooine in the first movie), otherwise the Empire wanted a across-the-board uniform appearance.

The stormtroopers were a feared force...until Endor. after their defeat by a handful of Rebels and primitive natives, two things changed. one, the stormtroopers were no longer seen as such an imposing force, and two, stormtroopers finally got some camouflaged armor - white was a glaringly obvious target.
