“Don’t you hate it when celebrities just – blah blah blah – talk about themselves? who asked, right?” So says Carrie Fisher at one point in her one-woman show, throughout which she, er, talks about herself loads.
Tellingly titled Wishful Drinking, this performance was filmed in new Jersey as part of a 148-date run, and is shaped around Fisher taking a typically batty look at life as Hollywood royalty.
Hearing Princess Leia talk about how she swapped pin-up status for pills and booze might not seem like a great laugh, but Wishful Drinking is just that. Fisher pads barefoot around the stage and talks about performing at nightclubs when she was 13 and growing up with a stepmother only three years her senior. She also neatly addresses her Star Wars fame, summing it up in one sentence: “George Lucas ruined my life.”
Fisher has been honing her acerbic written style for years, with successful screenplays and award-winning novels, so it’s no surprise that her live show (adapted from a memoir of the same name) is sharply observed and often very funny. It’s also pretty dark, toeing the line between funny and tragic – but her comic brush-offs of life’s pratfalls make for a warm and engaging show. Jordan Bassett
