Local librarians are challenging readers of all ages to have a bookish summer.
“The point is to keep kids reading all summer so they do better in school,” said Rose Momsen, the newest Point Roberts librarian. Summer reading program isn’t only for kids though, she stressed with programs and prizes for kids, teens and adults.
Readers sign up at the local library. Kids get their picture on the wall and keep track of their reading on a poster. “It’s a cumulative reading record,” Momsen said. Kids, teens and adults all qualify for weekly prize drawings and for a grand prize at the end of the summer. Nielson’s Building Center has donated a bike as the grand prize for the kid’s program and community donations have provided for an iPod shuffle as the teen grand prize.
Momsen, whose focus at the library will be on programs for children and teens, is hoping to expand events that will involve youth this summer. “There are seasonal programs like LEGO racing last month. In August we’ll have a teen research night and someone will come up and show teens how to use the library to look things up for research papers.
